2nd Grand Prix 2018

The second edition of the "Grand Prix Gelatissimo", the competition organized by our magazine in collaboration with the Stuttgart Fair as part of "Intergastra" (International Food Exhibition), went far beyond the most optimistic expectations. The original formula of the competition, studied and tested in previous editions to ensure maximum transparency in the assignment of trophies and prizes, was once again appreciated and attracted over a hundred competitors from different German "Lands” and beyond.

Four contests in four days (4-7 February) to win not only one of the three brand new Piaggio Vespa, a must of the Italian motorcycle production, but, above all, the "Best and Show", which crowns the winner of the "Grand Prix" which will need to be defended in two years, when the next edition will take place.

From the early hours, a large audience followed with interest the different stages of the competitions, from the freezing phase to the moment of the jury’s verdict.

The first day the competition was centered on the production of the “Fantasia” ice cream flavor; which gave ample space to competitors who have produced unusual flavors, uncommon combinations of ingredients that have yielded a unique and amazing result. Seeing that Italians don’t lack imagination, after a hard-fought final rush, the victory went to Michele Marchese from Monteriggioni.

The second day of the competition was centered on the production of Yogurt ice cream, while the third day the competitors faced each other with the production of Raspberry ice cream (Himbeere), these two flavors are particularly appreciated in Germany. After freezing, the samples presented on the various days were submitted anonymously to a pre-jury of specialized experts who identified the best six samples of each flavor, which were judged and voted in front of the competitors. The juries, different for each day of the competition, decreed the victory of the young Filippo Sonego from Baden Baden for the best Yogurt ice cream, while the German ice cream maker from Potsdam Sören Pollich won with his Raspberry ice cream.

On the last day of the fair, the three winners faced off in the "Best and Show", making their best Pistachio ice cream. A finale filled with emotions, because unlike what had happened in the first three days of the competition when, due to time constraints, the competitors presented themselves with their ready-made mixtures, this time the three Italian-german artisans had to start from scratch, with all the stages of production carried out in front of an intrigued and attentive public, and under the careful supervision of the competition assistants appointed for the occasion: Antonio Amati and Roberto Luraghi, both ice cream makers of undoubted professionalism. In the end, the jury had no doubts, decreeing the success of Filippo Sonego: to him, as well as the satisfaction of obtaining the maximum score, he was presented with the impressive cup, crowning him as the absolute winner.
